South Carolina's Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (SCGSSM, or GSSM) has no entrance exam of its own. Instead, every applicant submits one score report from a test they have already taken: the PSAT, the Pre-ACT, the SAT or the ACT. The score has to be from a test taken since January 2026. The school sets no minimum score and says scores are one factor among several, so treat the numbers below as signals, not cutoffs.
This guide covers the rules, the test dates that work for the 2026-27 cycle, and the part where the school's own pages give two different benchmarks.
The basic rule
The application requires one score report. Scores from before January 2026, such as 8th grade scores, are not considered. Every application is reviewed holistically by faculty, staff and leadership, so a score is read next to grades, essays, recommendations and the rest of the file.
Which test dates work
Because the score must arrive with the application, the calendar matters. For students who want to apply by the priority deadline of February 15, 2027, the school lists these last dates:
- SAT: December 5, 2026, with registration closing November 20, 2026.
- ACT: December 12, 2026, with registration closing November 6, 2026.
For applications later in the cycle, the last SAT is May 1, 2027 and the last ACT is April 10, 2027. But the school says the spaces in the entering class were filled by students who applied by the priority deadline, and later applications are considered only if space is available. A family that plans to test in spring is choosing to apply late.
The school does not name PSAT or Pre-ACT dates for the priority deadline on the pages we reviewed, so a student who plans to send one of those should confirm with the admissions office that the date works.
How to send the score
Applicants upload the PDF score report from their College Board or ACT account. The school's code for score reports is 410997.
Two sets of competitive scores
The school's pages do not agree on a single benchmark, and both are worth knowing.
- The application page says a PSAT Math score of 500 or higher and a Reading score of 490 or higher are most competitive.
- The FAQ lists competitive math scores as PSAT 550 or higher, SAT 600 or higher, and Pre-ACT or ACT 25 or higher.
We cannot tell you which is current. The school does not explain the difference, so read both as a range for the math section and remember that neither is a requirement. If your student is near the lower end, the school's own advice is to look at the whole application.
Questions families ask
Can an 8th grade score count? No. Scores from before January 2026 are not considered, so a student with only an older score needs to test again.
Do we need to send every test? The school asks for one score report. It does not say how it treats additional reports, so ask the admissions office if your student has several.
Is there a cutoff? No. The school sets no minimum score and no minimum GPA. The benchmarks above describe what it calls most competitive, which is different from a requirement.
Which test is better? The school accepts the PSAT, Pre-ACT, SAT and ACT and does not rank them. Pick the one your student can take on a date that fits the calendar above.
Grades matter alongside the score
The school says unweighted GPAs of 3.3 or higher are most competitive, and it sets no minimum. The enrolling Class of 2027 averaged 3.93 unweighted. That tells you the typical applicant has strong grades in the required courses, which include Geometry, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 by the end of 10th grade.
What the school has not published
The pages we reviewed do not describe testing accommodations for the PSAT, SAT or ACT. If your student has an approved accommodation, ask the testing organization first, then confirm with the admissions office that the report will be accepted. The school also does not publish an admit rate or the number of seats in the entering class.
A practical plan
First, find out whether your student already has a qualifying score from this school year. A PSAT from fall 2026 would count. Second, if a retake would help, register before the November deadlines. Third, upload the report early and check the portal to confirm it appears. Admissions questions go to 843-383-3901 or admissions@governors.school.
For a second set of eyes on your own student's testing plan, the EduAvenues high school admissions page is a good place to start, or you can ask about your student. More detail is in the preparation guide, the timeline and the FAQ.
